Every piece of pottery is
handmade by us in the workshop. It is thrown on the wheel, handled and then left to dry for at least four days. It is cleaned
and the famous Ewenny Pottery signature is handwritten on the bottom of the pot. Once there is enough pots for a kiln, it
is packed and fired to 1000oC, electric kilns are used and it takes about two days from firing up, reaching temperature,
to cooling.
The pot is then ready
to be glazed. A glaze is a liquid made from clays, stone and oxides. The making of glazes and its application
although looks easy is a highly skilled job. Alun has continued to develop a range of glazes that are uniquely Ewenny, he
dips it in one glaze and splashes on another. The glazed pots are put back into the kiln for a second firing this time to
1120oC for another two days. The glazes melt together to form the famous mottled decoration.
The pot is now ready
to be sold in the shop adjoining the workshop. The whole process can take up to 2-3 weeks and commissions 4-6 weeks.
